From Sushi Restaurant Beginnings to Senior Living Leadership
Tell us about your culinary journey—what led you to become a chef, and what brought you here?
“My culinary journey began at 16 when I got my first job at a sushi restaurant. I was immediately drawn to the creativity and precision of that style of cooking, and it sparked a real passion for the kitchen.
From there, I spent 12 years working at an assisted living facility next door to The Meridian at Lantana. During that time, I developed a strong connection to senior dining and always aspired to grow into a leadership role as head of dietary services at a larger operation like this one.”
Chris’s story reflects the dedication and passion families often look for when searching for senior living in Lantana. His years of experience working with older adults helped shape his understanding of how meaningful dining can be in a senior living setting.
A Passion for Cooking and Creating Comfort
What inspired your passion for cooking in the first place?
“I used to watch cooking shows as a kid.”
Sometimes a lifelong passion begins with something simple. For Chris, those early cooking shows sparked an interest that eventually grew into a rewarding career serving residents in senior living in Lantana.
What role does food play in helping residents feel comforted and at home?
“Food plays a huge role in helping residents feel comforted and at home because so many of life’s special moments revolve around meals. Family gatherings, holidays, celebrations, and traditions are often centered around food, and those memories stay with people throughout their lives. A familiar meal or favorite recipe can bring back feelings of comfort, connection, and happiness. My goal is to create dining experiences that not only nourish residents physically, but also provide a sense of warmth, community, and home.”
For many older adults transitioning into senior living in Lantana, maintaining familiar comforts and routines can make all the difference. Chris understands that meals can evoke powerful memories and emotions, which is why he focuses on creating experiences that feel personal and meaningful for every resident.
The Little Details That Make Meals Memorable
How do you make everyday meals feel special or memorable?
“I make everyday meals feel special by taking the time to pay attention to the details. From presentation and flavor to remembering residents’ preferences, the little things make a big difference. A thoughtfully prepared meal can turn an ordinary day into something memorable and give residents something to look forward to and enjoy together.”
Attention to detail is one of the defining qualities of exceptional dining services in senior living in Lantana. Residents appreciate when team members remember their favorite dishes or preferred flavors. These thoughtful touches help create a personalized dining experience that fosters comfort and familiarity.
At The Meridian at Lantana, dining is designed to feel social, engaging, and welcoming. Whether residents are enjoying breakfast with friends or gathering for themed events, meals become opportunities to connect and enjoy time together.
Resident Favorites and Meaningful Meals
Is there a dish you love to prepare for residents that always gets a great reaction?
“Asian cuisine is one of my favorite styles of food to prepare because it’s creative, flavorful, and always a resident favorite. Many residents specifically request Asian dishes for our Sunday brunch buffet, which makes it even more rewarding to create those meals. The brunch buffet has become a special tradition that residents look forward to each week, bringing everyone together to enjoy great food and a social atmosphere.”
Dining traditions help build a strong sense of community within senior living in Lantana. Weekly brunches and special dining events give residents something exciting to anticipate while encouraging social interaction and engagement.
Is there a dish that holds special meaning for you?
“One dish that holds special meaning for me is macaroni and cheese. It was the first dish I ever prepared that someone was willing to pay for, and that moment really helped set the stage for my future in cooking. It showed me early on that food could bring people comfort and happiness while also turning my passion into a career.”
Comfort foods often hold emotional connections, especially in senior living in Lantana, where familiar meals can bring a sense of nostalgia and joy. For Chris, that early experience reinforced the impact food can have on people emotionally.
Building Relationships Through Food
Can you share a favorite memory or moment you’ve had while cooking for residents?
“One of my favorite moments is when residents introduce me to their families during meals or special events, and I can see that everyone is genuinely happy with the food. Those moments stand out because food becomes more than just a meal—it brings people together, sparks conversation, and creates a shared experience between residents and their loved ones.
A particularly meaningful memory was when a resident spoke with my mother while she was touring the facility with my uncle. The resident told her she had raised a ‘nice boy’ and that she should be proud. That moment stayed with me because it reflected not only the relationships built through food, but also the trust and connection formed with the residents over time.”
Stories like these highlight the welcoming atmosphere families often hope to find when searching for senior living in Lantana. Dining experiences become opportunities for relationship-building between residents, families, and team members.
Chris’s connection with residents demonstrates the level of care and dedication that helps make The Meridian at Lantana feel personal and inviting.
Life Outside the Kitchen and Staying Inspired
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you outside the kitchen?
“One thing people might be surprised to learn about me is that I love cars and have had the opportunity to drive race cars on a track. It’s an exciting and exhilarating experience that I really enjoy outside of the kitchen.”
Learning about team members’ personal interests helps residents connect with them on a deeper level. In communities offering senior living in Lantana, those relationships often become an important part of residents’ daily lives.
How do you stay creative and inspired in your cooking?
“I stay creative and inspired by watching cooking shows and trying new ideas and techniques I see from other chefs. I also enjoy meal prepping for my family and friends, which gives me the opportunity to experiment with different flavors, dishes, and presentations outside of work.”
Creativity is essential when planning dining programs for senior living in Lantana. Residents appreciate variety and opportunities to try something new while still enjoying familiar favorites. Chris’s willingness to continue learning helps keep dining experiences fresh and enjoyable for residents.
Making a Meaningful Difference Every Day
What does it mean to you personally to cook for this community?
“Cooking for this community means a lot to me personally. I’m 40 years old and have worked in 10 assisted living facilities throughout my career, including the past 4 years at The Meridian at Lantana. Over that time, I’ve built meaningful relationships with residents and learned that you can gain so much wisdom from older adults through conversations, stories, and life lessons. Being able to do something meaningful every day and make a positive difference in the lives of residents is incredibly rewarding, and it has also made a lasting impact on me personally.”
